Short description length: ranking and the line people read

Play indexes the short description, so the words can match a search. It also appears under your title in Play search results, which is the line that earns or loses the tap.

That is influence, not a promise of rank. A stuffed list of keywords is harder to read and can violate Play’s metadata policy.

80 characters is about one sentence. Do not repeat the app title. Use the room for a benefit or a term the 30-character title could not fit.

Examples that fit

  • “Record meetings, get a transcript, and share notes with your team.” (66)

One sentence. Title words left out.

  • “Weekly meal plans, one grocery list, and dinners you can swap.” (62)

    Concrete outcome in under 80.

  • “Offline trail maps with elevation, closures, and a GPS track.” (61)

    Specific. No “best app” claim.

  • “Send invoices, track payments, and save receipts at tax time.” (61)

    Three jobs, still readable.

What to do next

When the length passes, check the live listing or draft the field with Nakxi. Neither step changes your rank by itself.

FAQ

What is the Google Play short description limit?

80 characters, including spaces. Short description length and the character limit are the same 80-character cap. Play Console will not save a longer line.

Is the short description indexed?

Yes. Google Play indexes it, and it is the line under your title in search. That makes it both a search field and the sentence that earns the tap. It does not guarantee a higher rank.

How is this different from the App Store subtitle?

The subtitle allows 30 characters. The Play short description allows 80. Do not paste one into the other without counting. Use the subtitle checker for Apple.

Should I repeat the app title in the short description?

No. The title is already the strongest Play field. Use the 80 characters for a benefit or a second keyword the title could not fit.
