App Store description character limit
The App Store and Google Play description limit is 4,000 characters.
4,000max
Description length: how each store uses 4,000 characters
Both stores cap the description at 4,000 characters, including spaces and line breaks. The same draft can be too long for either console.
Apple does not index the description. Write it for someone who already opened your product page. The indexed fields are the name, subtitle, and keywords.
Google Play does index the full description. The title and the 80-character short description still carry more weight. Repeating a keyword down the page is not a ranking tactic.
On both stores, the first two lines show before “more”. Say what the app does there. Use the rest for specific features, not a second copy of the first paragraph.
Examples that fit
-
“Fieldnote records the meeting, labels who spoke, and sends a summary your team can edit. Capture audio on your phone, review the transcript, and share notes without a separate recorder.” (185)
Opening lines. The first sentence is the one people read.
-
“Plan a week of dinners, swap a meal, and keep one grocery list. Paddle is a meal planner for people who decide food on Sunday and shop once.” (140)
Benefit first. The brand can wait a sentence.
-
“Download trail maps before you lose signal. Trailmark stores topo, elevation, and closures on your phone so a hike does not depend on coverage.” (143)
A Play description can use the same opener. The index is not a reason to add keywords.
What to do next
When the length passes, check the live listing or draft the field with Nakxi. Neither step changes your rank by itself.
FAQ
What is the App Store description character limit?
4,000 characters. Google Play’s full description is also 4,000. This page checks both. Description length and the character limit are the same 4,000-character cap, including spaces and line breaks.
Does Apple index the description?
No. Apple’s search index uses the app name, subtitle, and keywords field. The description is for people deciding whether to install.
Does Google Play index the description?
Yes. Play indexes the full description, with more weight on the title and the 80-character short description. Repeating a keyword does not raise your rank.
Should I write all 4,000 characters?
No. The first lines are what most people read before they tap “more”. Use the rest for specific features, and stop when you are repeating yourself.
